It is hard to be positive when your doctor says, “You have diabetes.” A fast-paced lifestyle, growing reliance on processed foods, lack of proper nutrition due to socioeconomic status, and physical inactivity are terrible health conditions for our present generation.

World diabetes day is celebrated annually on November 14 in response to the growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by the disease. In this post, I thought of writing some important ways to control Diabetes. The more you learn about it, the more confident you will become and the easier it will be to manage Diabetes.

Controlling Diabetes is a severe challenge, but you can learn to manage it. The primary step is to understand what Diabetes is. Most of the food you eat is converted into glucose or sugar for your body to use as energy.

Insulin, a hormone formed by the pancreas, helps the glucose get into your body’s cells. But when your body either does not make enough insulin or cannot use its insulin effectively, the sugar builds up in the blood and, over time, causes damage to vital organs of the body and nerves.

Best Healthy Food Choices

A healthy diet is a real weapon in the fight against Diabetes because once you take got Diabetes, your food choices matter a lot. It calls for choosing foods that are low in calories, avoiding refined, high-glycemic foods, and opting for frequent mini-meals. The idea is to stop blood sugar spiking.

Focus on having Non-Starchy Vegetables ( like carrots, spinach, lettuce,  kale, beans, etc.) and avoid canned vegetables with plenty of added sodium and stop cooking your veggies in added butter, cheese, or sauce. Opt for fresh fruits instead of canned ones loaded with high sugar syrups.

Anything fried or sweet should remain avoided. Chips, Namkeen, Cookies, Cakes, Pastries, and all Fast food items are high in refined carbohydrates, trans fats, and sodium, all of which are harmful to people with Diabetes. Instead of whole cream milk, choose low-fat milk and its products.

The key remains to eat a well-balanced diet. Consume small portions. Learn about different food serving sizes and how many servings you need in a meal. Avoid skipping breakfast as it can cause a spike in blood sugar levels. It can also lead to overeating and weight gain, a significant risk factor for Diabetes.

Participate in Physical Activities

A sedentary lifestyle kills and promotes Diabetes. Obesity has remained linked to an increased risk of Diabetes in several studies. Excess weight causes insulin resistance, whereas vigorous physical activity allows insulin to work more effectively.

Exercise speeds up the rate at which glucose in the blood stands absorbed by muscle cells. Besides controlling blood sugar, it also helps to maintain weight and blood pressure and raises good cholesterol while decreasing bad cholesterol. Take 30 minutes of your day to implement these simple lifestyle changes to control Diabetes.

  • Take a brisk walk or participate in sports such as swimming or tennis.
  • Park your car some distance away from your destination.
  • Instead of taking the elevator or escalator, take the stairs.
  • Every time you talk on the phone, take a walk.
  • Play with your children or take your dog for a walk.

Some studies have linked Diabetes to television viewing habits. Every two hours spent watching television increases the likelihood of developing Diabetes by 20%. People who care a lot about TVs are more likely to be overweight.

Adequate physical activity has a cumulative effect on diabetic patients’ bodies that no medicine can match. So, instead of using the remote, get up from your seat and change the channel yourself the next time you watch your favorite TV show. During commercials, walk around the room.
